The reddish-brown rock of Rocky Falls is rhyolite porphyry.  It formed as molten rock beneath the earth and flowed as lava onto the surface 1.5 billion years ago. 
Because of the hardness of the rhyolite, water erodes only a small portion in the cracks, creating a "shut in", where the harder rock shuts in the stream.

Here is a viewpoint after hiking up a ways to look down on the waterfall.
The waterfall cascades over the rocks into a large pool of water.

Rocky Falls is located on Route NN, off of Route H, east of Eminence and Winona, Missouri.  There is a walking trail, picnic areas, grills, and bathrooms.
